Please tell us who you are!!!
Hello everyone, as you already know, I am a newbie to the site!!! My name is Tom Douglas but most of my friends call me "Mas".
I am partially disabled from a work related accident and have been medically retired since 1994.
My home track is Sun Valley Speedway. Even though I live an hour north west of the track, I still consider it my home track because there are no other 1/5th scale tracks any closer to me than it so I consider it home :O).
I got my first RC car in 1977. It was a 1/8th scale Titan 100 that had a .19 K&B engine on it. The Titan RC car was made in Ojai California and was a spin-off of the Associated RC100 which was Associated’s top of the line car at the time. Both the Titan and the Associated cars were constructed mainly from 70-75-T6 aluminum.
I started racing RC cars in 1977 when I became a member of the Ventura Roadrunners RC Car Club.
I won the Ventura Roadrunners year end points championship from 1980 to 1984.
I was one of the Southern California Championship Series Steering Committee Members for Ventura from 1983 to 1985.
I organized and was also the official race director for the west coast’s first championship race ever held here. It was called the ROAR Region 6 1/8th Scale Championships and it was held here in Ventura in 1982. There were 150 drivers from all over the western states that signed up and showed up to race.
I was voted in as the vice president of the Ventura Roadrunners in 1980 and was then voted in as the president in 1981 and held the office until the end of 1984.
I started racing 1/5th scale cars in 2004. I won First Place in the Super Touring Car Class Expert C Main in the 2004 ROAR Nationals which was held at Sun Valley Speedway
Other than my 1/5th scale SVM MK5, the other Radio Control items I have are a 1/8th Scale HPI 4WD Proceed Can-Am car, I have a 1/8th Scale Associated RC 300BDCan-Am car, I also have an Associated RC10T stadium truck, I also have an XTM 1/10th scale stadium truck. I also have a Kyosho 4WD V-One-R 1/10th Scale On-Road Touring Car, and I have a Tamiya 1/10th Scale 4WD EVO-1 Electric car. I also have a 1/18th scale Team Losi Mini-T truck, and I also have about 6 or 7 of the Radio Shack 1/28th scale Xmods Custom RC cars, and lastly, believe it or not, I have 3 of the Radio Shack 1/64th Scale Hot Wheels Size RC Cars so that my grand daughters and I can race against each other in the dinning room.
So as you can see by the line up that I have that I like to drive RC cars and trucks no matter what size they are and will probably be racing some sort of radio control car or truck until I die..
It's really great to have another 5th scale web site to hang out at, so thanks guys!!.
My best to you all,
Tom "Mas" Douglas

Well guess its time to tell you guys a little about me.
Well for starters I've been in this hobby for almost 16 years, and yes that is over half my life. Been eyeing out large scale cars ever since 1987 when I was at Silverstone for a vintage F1 race, the "half time show" was a 1/4 scale demo race, and ever since I've been hooked on largescale cars. Even know the first one I bought was the baja. Now I have an xrc rc-1 and that will not be the last, lol! In the past I have raced full sized cars at a local oval track, and am dieing to get back at it. I've also raced a limited amount of go-kart races, I found it more my place beign a crew member as I'm 6'6". I am also a small engine technican, that all started out with being involved with kart racing. I feel at home with these small gas motors, and can not wait for my colection to grow!

Hi all! I'm Carnivore from Finland. Baja 5b is my first RC... :o Talk about addiction! :D I'm an engineer by trade and have been inventing little things on baja.. :) NOT anything spectacular. Just some practical little s**t. I'm a cheap bastard so my "inventions" are not going to turn world a better place. :) Just my world... :D
But if it makes your baja owning any less PITA, I guess I did what I was supposed to do... :)
Hi, I'm Tash. Kinda new I guess. Got my baja in March of this year. Love It! My bf has one too which he got at the same time. Having a blast! Talk to you all soon!

I can handle that,I like Honest People and to be Upfront and Honest with others and myself....
I've been the large scale buggy scene for about 4years now, and I love it...But my biggest peve(and I'am sure I will be yelled at for it) is when someone tells you " YOU NEED THIS PART" and buy it from here only....thats all I have to say...lets all go bash away.....;)

I was told about this site by Vertigo Performance... I am also a moderator on the Mad Baja Forum as well.. I have been into R/C cars since the 80's and still own and drive a Kyosho Burns 1/8 Buggy... I own several types of R/C cars and trucks from nitro to electric to my favorite.. the HPI Baja 5B... I am married with 3 kids, 2 dogs and a cat...The Baja takes up the vast majority of my free time and I wouldn't have it any other way....

Hey everyone. Thought I should stop being a non-conformist!:) My Dad's name is Dennis, so everyone calls me Honus, except my wife. She hates that nickname.:D My Dad introduced me to rc's when I was a teenager. I still miss that dope smell coming from the garage! I bought my first rc car when I was in the Army, which is how I ended up here in Cali. I live in the High Desert, so bashing areas are plenty. I just purchased a 1/5 baja. It arrived in Cali this morning. Should be at my front door by Tuesday. (fingers crossed):) I have three kids, A daughter, son, and a 6 month old chihuahua!:D

Hi guys my name is "Chris" aka Monsterman I've had my Baja a few days now. I ordered the RTR version from Tower, with their coupon code and shipping deal I just couldnt wait or pass it up any longer. I patiently waited the BIG BROWN TRUCK for days finally the other day I heard him pull up. He took a minute getting out of the truck, lol door opened and he had a HUGE box in his had.. I knew what this had to be.. Well sure enough get the box inside rip it open and there is my shiny new Baja the box itself was cool!! Ha ha :D
After opening the box slowly I pulled all the bags out and then removed the Baja right away noticed something wrong with the left rear wheel. The hub carrier was snapped.. Well I called Tower right away and they wanted me to ship back but I was like screw that so I called Hpi and my parts are in route.. This also gives me a chance to go over the buggy, take it apart to fix the broken part and do a good once over. I am ordering hop ups and other parts as we speak so those will be getting here soon after the holidays. I should be ready to go in about 2 weeks. Either way I know one thing its going to be hard to go back to Nitro now for me.. This thing is a MAMOTH BEAST!!
I am going to start it up tomorrow on a makshift stand and run a tank or two through it just let it idle and rev a little just to get that process going until I can get that hub carrier fixed..
Anyway glad to have found this place a new friend "Baja Owner" told me about it so here I am..

I currently live in Northern California. I've been in the hobby for 24 years now!... man I've gotten old!
I have taken part in most every scale and type of surface RC's there have been (or at least that I can think of); Gas/Electric, RWD/FWD/4WD, On-Road/Off-road/carpet/Rock Crawling, Cars/Trucks/Buggies/Motorcycles, and raced them all at some point! I've dabbled in Boats, Heli's, Planes and Gliders as well... no matter what I try it always comes back to the good ole Off-Road buggies and Trucks.
I often drooled over the larger scale vehicles in the past and made the decision this summer to by a Baja 5B RTR so I started doing my homework... that's how I found 5thScaleRacing! Somewhere along the way I caught rumor of the SS version and decided it was for me (I certainly didn't need another radio and besides I'm more "old school" I'd rather build my own cars if I have a choice!) and after an agonizing few month wait I've joined the ranks of the "Addicted" and now have my first "large" scale!
My current garage includes:
-Baja 5B SS
-Hellfire SS w/O.S.30vg
-LST2
-T4 (Team Edition)
-XXX-4G+
-TLT-1 (converted into a Crawler)
-Stampede (my Son's)

Hi, My name is Mark, the Forum name relates to my full size toy.
Played around with a Nitro HPI RS4-2 a few years ago but looking to get a Baja for offroad fun as I never use the RS4 because it's difficult to find places to play with it here in the UK (since all the shops started opening on Sunday's).
Initially I'm trawling the forums for info and what extras I need to buy when I buy the SS kit. Thought it was more polite to register and say hello than just lurk as an outsider.
Akela
01-21-2008, 07:59 PM
Welcome Mark,
I would love to see photos of your full size toy!
With the SS you are lucky there is not that much needed to buy right away. I would recomend axle extenders, and outerwears air filter cover. Then what ever esle fits your needs from there on out.
You will enjoy gas much more then nitro.

I know that a cy will fit with a small mod, so I guess a Zenoah will fit also.
Great to hear that your having a blast with rc's, with any car half the fun is fixing them up or rebuilding them.

hiya Akela thanks for you reply mate its nice to get some feed back. iv asked a few people about engines for my xrc buggy but they are not sure wich will fit :-( it would be better if i could get some pics of the engine mounts on the engine i want.dont know if you know of any places i can get pics of the engine mounts for this engine bb17x - ESP Modified & ESP Fully Ported 27.2cc Zenoah Engine 4.25+ HP (backorder)
$425.00
iv seen this engine on daves motors.
iv heard that this is a good engine but i think ill probly have to make some mods cous of the power it will kick out.
have you guys got any tips on changing an engine or what mods to make on my buggy one iv changed the engine, and if so were can i get the equipment i need to mod it up
Akela
03-16-2008, 03:40 AM
that motor would tear up the xrc, not in a good way. I think that would be way to much power. In my old xrc onroad, I had mounted the stock baja (23cc CY) It was like almost doubling the power! I know that a member here had fit a Zen 23 into his onroad, I would imagine that the mounts are the same.
Try looking up technokit parts, there may be a larger selection... pretty much the same buggy

you think so???? id have to mod everything up then if i went for that one lol. expecially the brakes lol. ill take a look at the zen 23.cc.
do you know were i can get coustom xrc parts like the upper and lower mounts for the front and back i think they would need to be stronger if i did an engine upgade as they are only made from cheap plastic and im sure they will snap quite soon lol.???? any ideas

I belive I remember the only mod that was needed for putting in a good motor... the pipe/can is diffrent, so I ended up modding the HPI baja stock can to work in it.
On motor mounts and other parts, Im not sure. Try contacting FG Supply. Or another shop that does carry XRC parts, they may know of something that will work.
Hope this helps

already did mate. were is the best place to buy tuned pipes from ???
Akela
03-18-2008, 10:51 PM
It will all depend on how much you want to spend. With a proper motor in the xrc, you now can get many diffrent tuned pipes. Let us know what dollar range you want to spend and then we can direct you. You can spend any where from about 100 bucks all the way to near a grand.

depends on the buggy your putting it in.. Hositle Hobbies has a great selection for the BAJA ...Oniells brothers has a great selection for other brands also

dont think any of those pipes will work on the xrc buggy, the motor sits in it like an onroad car. I will find a few pipes that will work, just give me a few minutes
Akela
03-19-2008, 04:43 AM
pipes like these would work
http://www.pro5thscale.com/tuned_exhaust
the Samba 3 would be a good choice, but is pricey
For cheaper there would be a pipe like this (not a real photo of the pipe)

Hey gang
My name is Glenn from Northern Ontario. Retired Laidlaw truck drive. Currently dable in the welding industry too.
Started my RC hobby as a kid in the Toronto area w/electric 1/10 scale. Moved up to North Bay Ont. and got back into RCs with my kids. My kids and grandkids are still into 1/10 electric, but for the past 3 years I've moved to 1/14 scale semi trucks.

Alright My Turn,
My name is Bob Reynolds and I live in Indiana. I have been interetsed in R/C since I was very young. I started my serious Hobby in the mid 1980's. The Tamiya Hornet did it for me. The hobby grade R/C's began right then. I worked for over 20 years in the Automotive industry, Mainly as a Technician. With a small break for about 4 years to Become a Snap-On Tools distributor. After about a 10 year very serious time in this hobby. I decided it was time to build my own track. After a couple years working on it it has been a bunch of fun. & Lots of work as well. On our first semi serious gathering, I had invited several people, it started to sprinkle rain. I figured we were done when a truck pulled in. A guy got out & introduced himself as Troy from Largescalerc.com. Coming from a small town, I had seen him around, & felt I had worked with his brother back in the 80's when it all started. He opened his tail gate & showed us his BIG toys. From that point on, my days of dealing with nitro MT type vehicles, was nearly over. In getting to know Troy & his brother, I knew I wanted to be a part of their business. I have been associated with largescalerc / Innovtive Hobby Products from nearly the begining. I now have worked "with / for" them for a year or so & I enjoy every day. My cars have gotten bigger & so has the fun level. I wanted to become a member here & help when I can, & learn when I can as well.
It's a great hobby to be involved in !

Ok my turn
My name is Julian and I live on Vancouver Island, I was imported from England just over 2 years ago though lived in a craphole called Quesnel BC from 98-2000 where I met my wife. Lived in Michigan, kalamazoo for 5 1/2 years and Perth Australia for 18mths so been around a bit.
First got into rc 25yrs ago with a tamiya monster beetle (electric) then a mardave nitro stock car followed and then a kyosho landjump chain dr 4x4.
Then I sold all my goods and chattles and moved to Aus and kept on the road until a few years ago. Got back into rc in 2003 with a t-maxx, spent piles of money on it and it still broke every bash session, savage came next quickly followed by a Losi LST and sts .28 engines; a billion hop ups later on my savage (including homemade LST shock conversion and a midtank conversion and it still didn't go like the LST) and a few on the losi(loved my LST, awesome truck all round) I sold old em all to move to largescale and an FG baja buggy...best move I ever made. Trouble is getting parts quick doesn't happen so now I'm thinking of a 4x4 1/5th scale (got to have 2 so always can go and play when one breaks..right! but don't tell the trouble and strife (wife for those that don't do cokney(sic) rhyme). So that's about it in a nutshell. Glad to find out that there are others here close by on the Island to run with.

Welcome Snaf.
All it takes to convince someone to defect is to drive a gasser.
We were out the other day with our new MCD's
Ruckus started his for the first time, it was a 40 minute session and no flame out
Gas - $5.00 a gallon (mixed) (About 200 min run time)
2.5 cents per minute, no down time, swearing, punching, kicking or bleeding hands.
Nitro - $40 a gallon (1 - 2 Glow plugs) Total roughly $55.00 (About 250 min run time)
22 cents per minute

Oh, aint it sweet how they're always clean just 1 time?
If you want some quick, free power, Chaos, take the can muffler off of the engine, if you look into the exhaust port of the can, you'll see some packing material. Take a hook-shaped piece of metal and get in there and rip out that quiet packing, it'll boost your low-end noticeably and at no additional charge!
Thanks to Clayton for the idea, i tried it and i like it! ;)
