i just use the elcon race clutch, no problems just works awesome. I have the lauterbacher clutch in my fg and has been running without issues as well for couple years now. My elcon has 5 tanks throu it today in the sandy conditions and shows almost no wear. Plus with the added bonus of adjustable 6000-10000 set up any way you like. My lauterbacher is adjustable as well. Any way for guys going throu 30 buck for a crappy clutch for couple tanks running, which is sad. Just spend the hundred bucks and get a full race ready 4 shoe clutch. The added bonus is they friggin launch off the line.

That sounds like a pretty good idea, which clutch of the 2 would you suggest?

Get the elcon, i'm sure they all should work. but i have the elcon in my baja, so i would use it. I was amazed to see after 5 tanks in the sand it showed almost no wear. They are kind of a teflon clutch. I also have the turtle bell with no holes however. Not sure if it makes a difference as far as not as much sand in there. My fg truck has the lauterbacher race hardened bell with hole and there clutch in it no problems either. this thing hooks up nice. how can you beat a 4 shoe clutch vs a 2 shoe. No comparison.

IMPORTANT. To make this clutch fit pertectly you have to add 2-4 of those shims. hpi part number Z897. It keeps the four screws from hitting the outside of bell. There is some play in the stock setup in and out so i just shimmed it out. Also when you get the kit. Make sure you use the shorter springs not the longer silver springs as they are for onroad cars.

I just counted from just starting to engage springs to full engagement. I went about a 1 and a half turns in. If i remember right. The engagement is about 6000-10000 so you can kinda figure out where you want it set by doing this. It takes a few tweaks to get it where you want it. Mladin you are going to love that clutch, i just love mine. No wear so to speak. Very good upgrade.

I got mine from krikke. It was about 120 bucks canadian, but it's 40 bucks for shipping from the netherlands. I ordered other stuff to so it was not so bad.

Moved the topic to here since it is more about Elcon than Zen.

Clutches are going to be the next perfomance must have.

In the FG world, performance clutches are considered a MUST, when upgrading to a Hotter ported Engine.

Adjustable Clutches are one of the main upgrades for racers, mostly onroad, but serius offroad racers also change to Adjustable Race Clutches.

At some time in the near future, I am also getting one of the new 4 shoe clutches, but haven't yet decided witch...

I just got my new elcon clutch. I've watched the video and I see how it goes together. I'm not certain on the spring adjustment though. If I understand right you screw the set screws in until there is pressure and then count the turns to give each spring the right setting?

Should I use some blue threadlocker on the set screws?

-Note to self -write to elcon about including written instructions for dummies like me:D

Where did you get clutch from? Waiting for them to become stock again.

Anybody know the setting and which springs to use?

I have written down for when I get mine that most people use it at 1.0 - 1.5 turns. Would have had mine today but UPS tried to delivery it when my wife had left. Well have to wait till tomorrow now.

Is that 1 - 1.5 turns out from fully compressed/closed?

Anybody know the setting and which springs to use?

Use the dark shorter springs. The plated shiny ones are for road use.

I set my springs as follows:
After everything is together I turned the set screws in until they just start to load. From then I turned all four in 1 1/4 turns exactly.

After running it I thought it engaged just right. I don't have a tach but it felt like it started to engage at the point just before the power band. It launches very nicely in the sand or hard dirt. I'm using a dominator pipe so settings for a stock pipe or other upgrades may make it different.

Enjoy!
Kelly

It is in from when the set screws load.

We need to know from fully compressed in order to get an accurate adjustment.

I did some adjusting last night and think that 2 out from the bottom is similar to 1.5in from the top

The Vid is down until the end of October.

I plan on getting this bad boy for my SS. I hate repairing stuff prematurely, so the 100.00 is money well spent IMHO

Anyone found them to be 'self adjusting'. Mine was running very nicely, but seems to engage VERY early. car will be stripped soon, so ill check the elcon, but just wondering if anyone else has had a problem with it 'loosening' the adjustment, and engaging very early. Does anyone use loctite?

VertigoPerformance

I use a very small dab of blue loctite (STAY AWAY FROM RED)

I just got my clutch, and had a question. The threaded rod that comes with it, how does that get used??? I tried watching the video, but the link kinda didn't work. Can someone explain it to me, or show me pic if you have one?

I understand how the shoes get held on and all that, but not sure how to attach it to the crank.

Thanks in advance!!!

The threaded rod is what holds the clutch on the crank shaft. screw the rod into the end of the crank shaft, and then screw the clutch onto it.

I've had my clutch on for a while, but haven't finished putting it back together. I just tried putting the stock bell on it, along with the VP CB carrier (soon to be replaced), and the bell seems to hitting the outer edge of the clutch. Question is, how far out, or how far out should, the clutch stick from the clutch case? I haven't measured mine, but it seem to be out a little farther than the stocker.

Thanks.

Vertigo Performance

What clutch bell are you using? The screws on the elcon can hit the inner face of the bell.
I think (been so long now) that you may need to shim your bell out

cmt56ss
04-05-2008, 06:41 PM
As of now, I'm using the stock bell (until you ship the VP one). I think you run the Elcon, how does that work with the VP bell? Did you have to shim it? If the VP and elcon work together then I'll ignore the current problem.

Vertigo Performance

I screwed the elcon up Stripped the screws so I am not using it. We did make provision for the elcon to fit and added 3mm holes to the bell so that you can adjust the clutch without taking the bell off. If you note where the adjusting screws are you can dremel that material out of the Crank case so that when the cover is installed you can still adjust the clutch without taking anything off.

no, my VP bell didn't need to be shimmed for the elcom, but my stocker did. I put the shims in between the pinion bolt and the carrier. That helps pull the bell away from the clutch just enough.
