hello,

well been play with the fg this weekend and have had some bad probs. Saturday ripped the sidewall out of the wheel while tuning the truck to go over to dave espi's to bash on sunday. Glued it back into the rim and switched it to the front. (never made it to dave's) Pissed me off.

Sunday took it out for more tuning and to test the repair on the tire. Heard a clunking noise. stop it to find the diff gear was loose. Took it in and torn it down. (first time on a tear down) found the screws had backed out of the gear ring went ahead and took it right out sliding the cover off found not much grease on the gears inside. I know I have to rebuild it but should I upgrade to alloy? I'm on a budget and I also found the rearend flex where the turnbuckles go into the upper arms it moves backa dn forth in the threads so need alloy arm there too.

Alloy is lighter and if your racing it is good. Bashing the steel is tougher. If the diffs arent sealed diffs the amount of grease you have there should be fine but if you pack it good it will tighten the diffs up. Upper a arms plastic do wear on most models over time and are ALLOT cheaper than aluminium, you can even have spares.

So this isn't a problem that fg has all the time? It's just when they start wearing out? So how many out therefor this site run just the stock plastic and don't upgrade to alloy?

thanks for the help!

The only time I upgrade to alloy A arms is when someone gives them to me or on the MCD where the upper arm links can tear out.

the plastic diff housing is one major issue with the fg's .. do the alloy convertion for trouble free running

Do the alloy conversion..(8484)? I think and while your @ it add the balldrives for only 75.00:good idea: thats what I did for my Firehammers.. it was the best money spent..I bought the diff conversion from here http://molzermoweryracing.com/acatalog/copy_of_Molzer_Mowery_Race_Gear.html

and the ball drive conversion from here

THANKS FOR THE REPLYS. BUT THE BUDGET IS DOWN SO ONLY PUTTING IT BACK TOGETHER WITH STOCK FOR NOW. THE 14 TOOTH DIFF GEAR IS BAD SO GETTING A NEW ONE OF THOSES. WHY IS MY CAPS ON? There thats better. Wanted the get the outerwears cover for the pull starter but that is alot of money right now. So will have to wait. Wife said you have the truck be happy.

If you want a CHEAPER alloy diff housing, you can always use the Duratrax one also..

here is the platic setups from Duratrax

here is the alloy
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHUB2&P=Z

you just CANNOT use the spider gears since the ouput cups are 6mm compared to the 8mm FG ones, and the splines are also different...

:good idea:
I think you should get them, may be a lot of $$$ but thy will be the best investment ever. Speciality with bier engines, and hard bashing.

Got my order from DDM the other day. I have to said they ship very fast. As for the post office thats another thing. I just replaced the bad screws and regreased the diff. brought new upper plastic A arms (didn't know they weren't threaded) that was fun getting them threaded in there.

Also got a TGN filter sleeve to go over the stock filter. Because the K&N filter when I pulled it off I found small pieces of sand in the velosity stack. Now I have triple protection on the air filter. Will be sticking with that.

Truck is back together for now. Will test it on sunday. Thanks for all the help with my questions!!

I know it's not sunday but got out today and ran it about 45 mins. Everything worked out good the gear mesh is great on the drive gears. Only thing I seen was the new grease I put in the diff is coming out on to the drive gears. Oh well it lubing them too. I silicone the sleeve on to the diff when I reassemblied it. The force must to great for it.

I gotta get different tires thses spin way to much in the grass. And with a little wetness look out. But it is fun. I'm thinking of putting on the monster tires What do you guys think I should run??

well if you really want to hook up on thsoe surfaces you should run a step pin tire , i found the MT tires are junk on grass and even dirt , i did put self tapper screws into my rears and it helped with traction "Helped" not fixed though and on pavement you get sparks lol .. but then agaim you wont get the same effect visually if that matters also becau they are a different diameter and doesnt look the same , also gearing would need to be changed .. you'll loose top end speed

BTW what do you all order from DDM? you never did say what you did do to fix the problem?

Well all that was really wrong was the m4x8mm screws that hole the drive48 tooth gear to the diff loosen up. So with money very tight right now I just ordered the basic things-the m4x8mm,m4x14mm, new heavy duty exhaust gasket, tgn filter cover and new plastic upper A arms.

Cleaned up the old gears, regreased, silicone the sleeve to the diff housing and used lock tight red on the screws. Reassemblied with new parts and she is rocking again.

I want to start this winter by putting some alloy on her to get rid of the flexing in the rear. But the RV business is starting to slow down very badly. And money has become very tight. I'm just happy I was able to get a used 5th scale truck and have something to talk about with my friends here.
